Singing

Just as the short poems of the gathas can help us return to the present moment, the music and words in a song help us share the present moment with others. Singing, alone or with others, is also a kind of food: when we sing music and words that are heart-warming, the heart and the mind are both warmed. Singing together, we are both feeding others and being fed. Together, we create the voice of the Sangha Body, and it is stronger and more joyful.

Very old musical instruments are highly prized, because the repeated vibration of their singing has changed the very nature of their body. The tight connections of glue and wood have loosened, and they have attuned themselves to the rhythms and the harmonies that they themselves have created, song by song, day by day, year after year. The voice grows more resonant over time.

The atoms in a bell, which seem to the eye and to the touch to be permanent and solid, are also fluid. They look without looking for the most comfortable positions, and arrange themselves around the nature of their sound. If you could record the sound of a bell in time-lapse audiography, I am sure you would witness its ripening.

If you pick up a new stringed instrument and a cherished older one, you might compare, and dismiss the newer one for lack of quality. If you looked deeply, however, you could see the beautiful, seasoned melody waiting in the young one. It would be like the oak that is waiting in the acorn: you would water and care for the sprout or the sapling, that it might grow to give you shade. Playing that younger instrument diligently, gently and with attention, you and the instrument and time can make a kind of music that is eternal.

This list of songs is collected from Plum Village songbooks and resources. Where possible, we include links to resources on line, where you can hear one or more versions of the music as performed and recorded by members of the fourfold Sangha. These are indicated with a sunshine character:. If your favorite version isn’t listed, please send us a link!

A selection of songs from the Fourfold Sangha

    1A Little Seed

A little seed for me to sow,
A little earth to make it grow.

A little hole, a little pat.
A little wish and that is that.

A little Sun, a little shower,
    A little while, a then a flower.

from a poem by Mabel Watts

    2A Reminder

I am of the nature to grow old
     This body is less steady
     This mind more slow
I cannot escape the touch of time, I know
I smile to the nature of age

I’m also of the nature to be unwell
     This body a community
Of light and dark in every cell
I cannot escape the pain that dis-ease spells
I smile to the nature of ill health

And I am of the nature to pass away
     This body is a flowering
From seed to seed it cannot stay
I can’t escape the touch of death life brings my way
I smile to the nature of life

Everything I love is of the nature to change
All that makes me glad, my dear
Is water sifting through my hands
I must let go of everything I never really had
I smile to the nature of change

My only true possessions are my actions and my words
     They are my continuation
     Touching everything I contemplate
I can’t escape the consequences I myself create
I smile to the nature of the path

words and music by Mark Schultz

    3Alone Again (Promise Me)
An acoustic version of this song, from the internet
    100

    Alone again I’ll go on
    with bent head, but knowing
    the immortality of love
and on the long rough road
both sun and moon will shine

Promise me, promise me this day
while the sun is just over head
even as they strike you down
with mountain of hate and violence
    remember brother
    men is not our enemy

Just your pity, just your love
    invincible limitless
hatred will never let you face the beast in man
and one day when you face this beast alone
your courage intact, your eyes kind

Out of your smile will bloom a flower
and those who love you will behold you
across ten thousand worlds of dying
    of dying and birth

    Alone again I’ll go on
    with bent head but knowing
    the immortality of love
and on the long rough road
both sun and moon will shine
    lightening my way

    4An Island Unto Myself

shares the same tune as “Breathing In, Breathing Out”

    Being an island unto myself.
    As an island unto myself.
    Buddha is my mindfulness.
    Shining near, shining far.
    Dharma is my breathing,
    guarding body and mind.
    I am free.

    Being an island unto myself.
    As an island unto myself.
    Sangha is my Five Skandhas,
    working in harmony.
    Taking refuge in myself.
    Coming back to myself.
I am free. I am free. I am free.

    7Cultivate Joy

    Cultivate joy, hour by hour
Smile by smile, flower by flower
Sow seeds of joy among gloom and despair
Cultivate joy and joy will be there.
When you cultivate joy, joy will be there.

    Cultivate peace, hour by hour,
Smile by smile, flower by flower
Sow seeds of peace among hate and fear
Cultivate peace and peace will appear.
Where you cultivate peace, peace will appear.

    Cultivate love, hour by hour,

32Please Call Me by My True Names

A poem by Thầy, set to music

My joy is like spring, so warm,
    It makes flowers bloom
    all over the Earth.
My pain is like a river of tears,
So vast it fills the four oceans.

Please call me by my true names.
So I can hear all my cries and laughter at once,
So I can see that my joy and pain are one.

Please call me by my true names.
So that I can wake up,
And the door of my heart
    can be left open. ×2

    (The door of compassion)

Here is a version of the song (Voces del Bosque / YouTube)

    33Silence an Ocean

… from the poem by Rumi, in translation:

Silence is an ocean. Speech is a river.
When the ocean is searching for you,
    don’t walk into the language-river.
    Listen to the ocean;
bring your chattering business to an end.
    Traditional words are just babbling
    in that presence,
and babbling is a substitute for sight.

    Silence is an ocean
    Language is a river
    A hundred voices inside saying
    That’s enough for now

When the ocean calls to you
    Don’t walk to the river
    Listen to the ocean
    That’s enough for now

Here is a version of the song (True Aspiration of the Heart / YouTube)

I listen to the song of the sky it has no name
I listen to the song of the sky it has no words
I listen to the song of the sky and I can see
    The sky is free
    The sky is free

I listen to the song of the moon it has no name
I listen to the song of the moon it has no words
I listen to the song of the moon and I can see
    The moon is free
    The moon is free

    And I am free
    I am free

    35Standing Like a Tree

I am my teachers, my friends
I am one and yet am many

Here is a version of this song from the Wake Up Plum Village album

    42We're All Moving

We’re all moving on a journey to nowhere
Taking it easy, taking it slow.

No more worries, no need to hurry,
Nothing to carry, let it all go.

And when I rise, let me rise
    Like a bird, joyfully.

And when I fall, let me fall,
    Like a leaf, gracefully,
    without regret.

And when I stand, let me stand,
Like a tree, strong and tall.

And when I lie, let me lie,
    Like a lake, peacefully,
    calm and still.

And when I work, let me work,
    Like a bee, wholeheartedly.

And when I rest, let me rest,
Like a river at the sea.

And when I play, let me play,
    Like a breeze, refreshingly,
    light and clear.
